Child's Well Visit, 2 to 4 Weeks: Care Instructions

Your baby is already watching and listening to you. Talking, cuddling, hugging, and kissing are all ways that you can help your baby grow and develop.

Your baby may look at faces and follow an object with their eyes. They may respond to sounds by blinking, crying, or seeming to be startled.

At this stage, your baby may sleep most of the day and wake up about every 2 to 3 hours to eat. Each baby is different.

Feeding your baby

  • Feed your baby whenever they're hungry.

  • If you formula-feed, use a formula with iron.

  • Don't warm bottles in the microwave.

Keeping your baby safe while they sleep

  • Always put your baby to sleep on their back.

  • Don't put sleep positioners, bumper pads, loose bedding, or stuffed animals in the crib.

  • Don't sleep with your baby. This includes in your bed or on a couch or chair.

  • Have your baby sleep in the same room as you for at least the first 6 months.

  • Don't place your baby in a car seat, sling, swing, bouncer, or stroller to sleep.

Soothing your crying baby

  • Change their diaper if it's dirty or wet.

  • Feed and burp them.

  • Add or remove clothes.

  • Hold them close.

  • Give them a warm bath. Wrap them in a blanket.

  • If your baby still cries, put them in the crib and close the door. Wait 10 to 15 minutes to see if they fall asleep.

  • Try these tips again if your baby is still crying.

Caring for yourself

  • Trust yourself. If something doesn't feel right with your body, tell your doctor.

  • Sleep when your baby sleeps, drink plenty of fluids, and ask for help if you need it.

  • Watch for the "baby blues." If you or your partner feels sad or anxious for more than 2 weeks, tell your doctor.

Getting vaccines

  • Make sure your baby gets all the recommended vaccines.

Follow-up care is a key part of your child's treatment and safety. Be sure to make and go to all appointments, and call your doctor if your child is having problems. It's also a good idea to know your child's test results and keep a list of the medicines your child takes.
